Meet Nancy Velasco, RN, Field Case Manager
Nancy Velasco has worked at Careworks for more than half of her career in case management. Still, she continues to learn something new each day and thrives because of it. Her love for a challenge has motivated her and led to the greatest opportunities in her career. Nancy cherishes her daily work, but the most rewarding part for her is watching her claimants thrive as she guides them through the healing process.
“Assisting with translating and helping injured employees understand their medical treatments during a difficult and scary time is very fulfilling. It’s why I love being a case manager.”
A memorable moment
Nancy’s most memorable moment was meeting *Mark, a 31-year-old Spanish-speaking employee. Mark had been living a normal life until nine months prior, when he sustained an on-the-job injury while helping a coworker operate a compactor and had to have four fingers on his right hand amputated. When Nancy met Mark, she could feel the devastation from both him and his family. Grieving the loss of his fingers and feeling weighed down by fear of the future, Mark isolated himself and resisted communicating with Nancy or his family.
Making a difference
As an experienced field case manager, Nancy acted diligently by following up with Mark on a weekly basis to stay updated with his medical status while coordinating his occupational therapy and prosthesis appointments. To ensure Mark could progress without any outside challenges, Nancy made certain he was receiving the right care at the right time.
A positive outcome
Recently, Mark received cosmetic prosthesis. When Nancy walked into the appointment, she was pleased to be greeted with a massive smile. Mark was incredibly grateful and told her repeatedly how happy and confident he felt due to the procedure. He told her that despite this having been a difficult journey, he could not be more appreciative to have Nancy on his file to help.
“Files like this one remind me of my passion for this job and how rewarding being a nurse case manager can be.”
