Celebrating Disability Pride Month at Careworks

circles

At Careworks, we understand that individuality in employability knows no boundaries. July is Disability Pride Month, and as an inclusive employer, we hope to bring awareness to the uniqueness of every colleague on our team, and those we welcome in the future.

Disability Pride Month is not only a time to shine a light on embracing each other’s differences, but it’s also a time of understanding and visibility. Let’s take this opportunity to reflect on how we can support and uplift one another, not just this month, but every day.

What is Disability Pride Month?

Disability Pride Month is a time to celebrate those with disabilities and encourage inclusiveness, acceptance, and respect. It is also a month to acknowledging the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act  (ADA) and the monumental impact this had in solidifying workplace rights for those with disabilities.

What is the ADA?

The Americans with Disabilities Act is a law that protects the rights of disabled people in many different facets of public life while prohibiting discrimination. It was signed and put into place on July 26, 1990, a primary reason we celebrate during this month! Disabled people represent almost 28% of adults in America, but with the ADA, it became acknowledged that this community has just as much of a right to a safe and productive workplace as everyone else – no more, no less.

How can I take part in celebrating Disability Pride Month?

There are many ways to take part in the celebration. For one, stay informed. Catch up with the news and disability focused stories and progression or regression happening in your country. Another way is to learn more and do active research on disability history and modern culture. To really get active this month, advocate vocally and locally for the disability community or attend a disability pride event to show support.

How do I ask my employer for an accommodation?

Requesting a workplace accommodation can feel daunting, but it’s an important step toward ensuring you have what you need to succeed. Start by reviewing your company’s internal resources or HR policies, and don’t hesitate to be vocal about your needs. Accommodations can take many forms such as additional or modified equipment, changes to your work environment, or adjustments to your schedule.

How does Careworks support those with disabilities?

We believe that everyone deserves the tools and environment they need to thrive. From providing closed captioning to conducting ergonomics evaluations, Careworks is committed to creating inclusive and accessible workplaces. Whether it’s our colleagues or the individuals we serve, we ensure access to the right equipment and technological advances tailored to their unique needs.

Happy Disability Pride Month from all of us at Careworks! Let’s continue to celebrate, advocate, and grow together.
