“Throughout my career, I have repeatedly been reminded when we truly work as a team with the injured employee, the medical provider, the adjuster, and the employer, it ensures the injured employee obtains the best possible care for their injury in a timely manner. Ensuring all parties are kept informed in a timely manner is a winning scenario for everyone from what may have started as a very traumatic incident. This has kept me doing what I do for the past 37 years!”

Challenge

In May 2026, a 50-year-old school clerk sustained an injury to her lower back and pelvic region while lifting boxes of files. Following her initial medical evaluation, diagnostic testing and a referral to a urologist were recommended to further investigate her symptoms. However, delays in scheduling the diagnostic testing created uncertainty regarding the nature of the injury and the appropriate course of treatment.

Recognizing the need to move care forward and avoid unnecessary delays, Anne was assigned to assist with coordination and support.

Solution

Anne immediately took action to coordinate the injured employee’s care. Through proactive communication with the injured employee, medical providers, and diagnostic facility, she expedited scheduling of the ordered MRI, ensuring the diagnostic study was completed promptly.

Anne obtained and reviewed the MRI results, which confirmed there was no acute injury and no evidence of a urological condition related to the work incident. Based on these findings, the urology referral was no longer necessary, allowing treatment efforts to remain focused on the accepted lumbar and pelvic sprain/strain diagnosis.

To further support appropriate medical management, Anne recommended and facilitated a peer review. The reviewing physician concurred that the compensable diagnosis should remain limited to the lumbar and pelvic sprain/strain and recommended a course of formal physical therapy. Working closely with the claims adjuster, Anne expedited authorization and initiation of physical therapy services so treatment could begin without delay.

Throughout the process, Anne maintained ongoing communication with the injured employee, answering questions, providing education, and encouraging compliance with the prescribed treatment plan.

Result

By accelerating the diagnostic process and helping clarify the accepted diagnosis, Anne ensured the injured employee received the right treatment as soon as possible. The MRI findings eliminated the need for additional specialty consultations and diagnostic workups that were unrelated to the work injury, while physical therapy was initiated quickly to support recovery.

Most importantly, the employee remained at work in a modified-duty capacity throughout the claim, avoiding lost work time and maintaining productivity for the school district.
